8 Top Side Hustles For Stay-at-Home Moms

March 14, 2021

Are you looking for side hustles for stay-at-home moms? If you’re like me and wanting to find ways to stay home with your kids and make money while working from home, you’ve come to the right place.

I knew when I found out I was pregnant that I didn’t want to go back to work, and I wanted to stay home with my son. I also knew that I wanted to make money staying at home to contribute to our finances.

Growing up, my mom was a stay-at-home mom, and she always said that the extra time with us was priceless.

I did a lot of research when I was pregnant on what the best side hustles were for stay-at-home moms, and decided to try some of these myself.

Being a mom is hard, being a stay-at-home mom and trying to work at the same time is even harder.

But let me tell you, it’s totally manageable and so worth it if it means spending more time with your children.

Blogging and being a content creator on Instagram is my side hustle and the one that was the best option for me.

I’ve also taught English online through Qkids. which I will explain more in my post, and I’ve also sold my services on Pinterest by creating pins for brands and bloggers.

The opportunities are endless, and again it really depends on your interests and how much you’re willing to put into your side hustle.

So without further ado, here are my best side hustles for stay-at-home moms.

**By the way, this post contains affiliate links at no extra cost to you. I only list products that I love and may have used myself.  Thank you!**

1. Best Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms? Blogging

Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms

So, I’ve put blogging as number 1 because this is my side hustle. Firstly, it’s not something where you can make money overnight. Blogging requires patience, consistency, and an SEO strategy that you need to learn over time.

I’ve been blogging since 2019 but I haven’t been consistent throughout. Not until December of 2020 did I start being more consistent with blogging.

The best way to start a blog is to sign up with Bluehost as they are the top web hosting platform for your blog.

I hired someone off Fiverr to create my website for me through WordPress.  This cost me around $250 CAD but was definitely worth it because it gave me the extra time to get started on writing blog posts.

1. Take Courses on Blogging

I took some blogging courses on Udemy, which is a platform where you can enroll in courses in just about anything.

I learned so many tricks and tips on how to blog through Udemy.  So I highly recommend enrolling yourself in a class or two to learn the ropes about blogging and get yourself familiar with writing blog posts and SEO.

I’ve also taken courses by A Beautiful Mess, and these courses have helped me SO MUCH when it comes to monetizing my blog and learning SEO in a way that makes sense. I highly recommend all of their courses.

2. Blogging Takes Patience

Also, it’s important to note that blogging takes time. It’s not a get-rich-quick job that’ll make you money overnight.

Blogging takes practice and patience to get you where you want to be. It may take a year or two to start seeing significant traffic and money, but good things come to those that wait.

There is really good money in blogging if it’s done the right way, so I highly recommend it as a side hustle for stay-at-home moms.

2. Best Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms? Instagram Influencer/Content Creator

In April of 2020, I decided to start an Instagram page to help promote my blog.  It was the start of the pandemic and quarantine, so I thought it would be a good idea to try it out and see where it could take me.

Most of the money that I made in 2020/2021 is from content creation through Instagram. I’ve had the opportunity to work with many brands through this platform and I’ve met so many amazing people from all over the world.

I’ve worked with brands such as Endy, Shoppers Drug Mart, Organika, numerous children’s clothing stores, and boutiques, and local businesses. I don’t think I would have been able to partner with these brands if it wasn’t for Instagram.

I’ve been gifted thousands of dollars worth of products in the last year.  An Endy mattress, hundreds of dollars worth of skincare and beauty care, clothing for Milan, a Lolipop baby monitor and so much more.   I’ve even collaborated on a few local photoshoots which were so much fun.

Once I hit 5000 followers I then started charging brands per post/reels.

I am close to 10k followers and charge $100 per post. Instagram takes time to learn but it is totally doable and honestly so much fun.

The first step is to think of a niche, a name, and just go for it. I was super nervous starting my Instagram page because I do like to be a private person for the most part.

I think that’s the introverted side of me that doesn’t like to be in the spotlight. I’m so glad that I started as it has gotten me out of my shell, and I’ve met so many awesome people through this platform.

I plan on continuing content creating for as long as I can, as it has been nothing but a positive experience for me.

And keep in mind you can share as much or as little as you’d like.

But being consistent and having a plan is key to creating a successful Instagram page.

Just like blogging, being an influencer/content creator takes time, but it’s totally worth it and you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

3. Best Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms? Teach English Online

Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms

Another great side hustle for stay-at-home moms is to teach online.  I taught English to children in China through a platform called Qkids.

I taught with Qkids for about 2 years and really enjoyed it. You need to commit to a minimum of 12 hours per week which is very doable.

They have morning and evening classes so you can work around your schedule.  However, you do have to keep in mind the time difference.

You are working on China’s time so you have to factor that in when you’re planning your hours and schedule.

I live in Vancouver so our time zone is PST and China’s is EST. there is a 16 hour time difference (China is 16 hours ahead of Vancouver).

Qkids Base pay is $8  for a full lesson which is 30 minutes.  You’re also eligible for $1 Performance Fee for each lesson based on family review.

You’re also eligible for $1 Attendance Bonus for each lesson once a minimum of 15 lessons is taught in a week.

For me, I would do the early morning classes and get it out of the way so that I had the rest of the day to spend time with Milan.

The reason I stopped was that I started my blog and Instagram page and didn’t have the time to commit 12 hours a week.

I loved working with Qkids and hope to work with them again when I can find the time to do so.

Benefits to working with Qkids:

  • Set your own schedule
  • Work when you want, where you want
  • The lesson is pre-planned
  • Earn $16 USD per hour with Qkids
  • Payments directly to your bank account every month

4. Best Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms? Open an Etsy Shop.

Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms

One of the best side hustles for stay-at-home moms is to open up an Etsy shop.

You can sell crafts, jewelry, art, posters, home decor, personalized items, digital designs, and more.

My personal favorite is digital downloads because you only have to create something once and can sell it as many times as you’d like.

For example, you can create a digital download such as invitations, party decor, artwork, etc, and sell the download on Etsy.

Once the customer pays for the digital download they’ll receive a download link and can print it themselves, instead of you sending it out to them.

User-friendly design websites like Canva are helpful tools to help create digital downloads. I love using Canva for all my design needs and love that it is so easy to use.

I dabbled in digital downloads for a while and even created my own Etsy page. But as I mentioned before I started a blog and Instagram page which takes up a lot of my time, so I wasn’t able to keep up with it.

I always advise people who want to open up an Etsy page to create something that is unique.

There are millions of shops on Etsy, so you want your products to stand out.  Etsy is a great side hustle for stay-at-home moms and is a fun way to earn a little extra cash.

5. Best Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms? Amazon FBA

Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms

Becoming an Amazon FBA (fulfillment by Amazon) is another awesome side hustle for stay-at-home moms.

I’ve done a lot of research in regards to becoming an Amazon FBA, and it was something that I also considered.

What this entails, is that you find the inventory while Amazon stores the product for you.

They pack, ship, and handle all the customer service as well.  Amazon keeps a percentage of the sale as a commission and service fee.

You can check out wholesale websites such as Alibaba.com and scan the site to see if there is anything of interest to you.

Alibaba sells items for super cheap, and you can resell them on Amazon for a higher price, making a great profit.

For example, you can buy toddler sippy cups for $0.86 each (min 30 pieces).

You can then sell the cups on Amazon for $10 each making a $9.14 profit before Amazon’s commission and service fee.

Multiply that by 30 pieces, that’s a $274 profit that you’ve made on the sippy cups.

There are a variety of items you can purchase on Alibaba, the possibilities are endless.

The great thing about Amazon is that you don’t have to worry about stocking items, shipping, or customer service because Amazon does all of that for you.

The only thing you have to worry about is making sure that stock is available.

6. Best Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms? Get Cash Back While You Shop

Rakuten is an amazing side hustle for stay-at-home moms.  I don’t know if I would classify it as a stay-at-home job but if you’re anything like me and love shopping all the time, then this app is definitely for you.

Rakuten is a cashback app that pays you to shop, literally.

They include stores like Gap, H&M, Indigo, Old Navy, and hundreds of more stores where you can shop and get paid.

Is there a catch? Nope, signing up is free and you can sign up with my link here and receive an extra $5 on your first purchase.

I’ve been using Rakuten for a year now and so far I’ve made around $600.  I love that I can add this to my list of side hustles for stay-at-home moms because you’re getting paid to shop, how cool is that?

My blog post 9 Guaranteed Money-Saving Tips to Try in 2021 also explains how I’ve saved money by using Rakuten.  Check out my post for more ideas on how to save money this year.

Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms

This is another great side hustle for stay-at-home moms. There is a lot of money to be made with Pinterest and Pinterest virtual assistants are high in demand right now.

Pinterest is a visual search engine and more and more businesses are using Pinterest to promote their products.  Most if not all bloggers like myself use Pinterest as a means of promoting their blog posts (it’s one of the best ways to promote your blog).

Pinterest virtual assistants can make businesses a lot of money if done right.  How does one get started on becoming a Pinterest virtual assistant?  Become a Pinterest VA teaches you literally everything you need to know when it comes to learning the ropes.

You can work anywhere in the world as a Pinterest VA.   This is one of my favorite side hustles for stay-at-home moms.

8. Best Side Hustle for Stay-at-Home Moms? Freelance Writer

This is another great side hustle for stay-at-home moms who love to write.  There are thousands of freelance jobs out there. Earn More Writing is a great course that can help you land jobs on sites like Upwork,  iWriter,  Flexjobs, Blogging Pro, and much more.

These platforms enable freelancers to look for both part-time and full-time work, so you can create your own schedule. They’re also suited for different skill levels so you can find a new writing opportunity, whether you’re just starting out, or are an expert in the industry.
